Taking a deep breath
This year we are exploring the idea of outdoor learning... We spend an hour every afternoon in a new kind of classroom. Reading this week and thinking about some of the photos I had taken, I thought about this idea of thinking bigger and how natural it seems to children.
"If you can slow your eye down, your heart down, your mind down, you'll give yourself the opportunity to see what's really there."
One moment this week I sat at the edge of the sand area with two Danish boys. One of them is in my class and speaks no English although he is already understanding more and more. When I slowed down in that moment I thought how amazing it is that children take something so complex as learning a language and quickly make sense of it. As I have continued to observe this week I felt much more like the student than the teacher at the way a child looks at the world and its complexity and seeks to interact with it.
A steady rain on Friday tested our stance of, "Rain or shine!" I think my name was still ringing in my head, as we struggled to get rain pants, boots, coats, umbrellas... More than once I thought, this is a bit crazy but I was again proven wrong! With camera in one hand and balancing my umbrella in the other I was again taught how to truly live.. To be willing to jump in a puddle and find wonder in how it moves. Together a splash, a smile, and laughter brings a sense of belonging. Time to take deep breaths in our Landscape of Learning awakens us to its Joy!
